John David Moffat is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker, originally from Bakersfield, California. He has directed a slew of music videos, commercials as well as three feature films: Blackout Experiment, Goin' Around and Territory. Drawn towards the intricacies of familial relationships, these films are the result of observation, life experience, and grit. Each film, in its own way, is suspenseful, atmospheric and deals with the deeply mortal pieces of the human condition: love, loss, heartbreak, survival, anger, friendship, shame and lust. His style is visceral and emotive, connecting with his audience through films that pull deeply on the different threads of universal emotion and catharsis, leaving them punched in their metaphorical guts.
John's first feature, Blackout Experiment, is about strangers trapped together, trying to survive. In this escape room-style horror film, we watch as humanity unravels, revealing the base emotions that society covers.
His second feature length film, Goin' Around, is an earnest tale about grief and loving deeply in the wake of a family member dying, confronting how each relative's perception can be markedly different. Centered around a musical anti-hero, whiskey-fueled, motorcycle-riding chaos arises as he digs up the past and its demons when returning home. Goin' Around mulls over sadness, existential dread, betrayal, anger and the fun of hanging out with old pals in the midst of coming to terms with mortality.
Territory is a horror-sci-fi hybrid feature length about unconditional love and survivalism shown through the two conflicting lenses of skepticism and wonder. Centered on a couple deep into their marriage, one of them discovers a storied, remote forest that was shut down in the 1950s after many suspicious disappearances. When she leaves to experience it for herself, he goes in after her, fearing for her safety and coming face-to-face with the danger within the restricted wilderness. We follow both of their experiences navigating the wild that has evolved to use its darkness as a weapon of survival.
Whether it's genre bending quests, or family tension, John seeks the truth and sings it loud with his cinematic vocal chords.
